With a doctoral degree in Engineering Mathematics (specialization in Control Systems), I had worked for many years as a professor teaching at the Simón Bolívar University in Caracas, Venezuela and then later in the U.S. as a firmware and control systems engineer for several high-tech companies in California. I have always enjoyed my profession which allows me to work in or with teams and use my intellectual abilities to find solutions to a myriad of technological problems. However, I was still restless and my satisfaction was not complete. I thought I had complete control of my life until one day when I was about to lose everything I had ever really loved in my life – opening up before me a whole aspect of reality I never saw before. I had the realization that I had to discover life as it is and to experience the deepest connection among all of us. It was clear to me that I needed physical and emotional healing so I temporarily withdrew from my normal life to find the answer. As a result of that quest, I wrote the book Spirituality: The Awareness of Reality−How to ‘See’ the Unseen and Break Free From Suffering Caused By a Narrow Perception of Reality where I describe a way to live a more harmonious life based on fundamental principles or pillars which are as ancient as human civilization. I received the inspiration, among many others, of a spiritual practice that I describe in the book. This practice leads the practitioner to take ownership of their own well-being and to the manifestation of their deepest desires. I believe in the unity of the mind, body, and the energy from the Divine source, the unseen, which we all can access. A unity that I put into practice at Ardent Light.
As my path was unfolding, so was my wife’s journey–and so much in common we do have. I share her ideals, but as a “practical engineer,” I knew there are practical limitations for everything we embark on in life. Thus, the idea to explore new natural and pristine places arose and from that idea, a potential reality is still there awaiting us. I thought that being close to nature, being in a pristine environment, was more conducive to a holistic healing center and practice, as well as an ideal place for creativity to unfold at its highest potential. Nature, I believe, is the ideal place for retirement, of course, without neglecting the necessary comfort we all deserve. As nature is ideal for creativity and for learning, one of my dreams for my golden years is to create a free center for higher education on the land we have found in Costa Rica, where students from all over the world can come to learn the skills they need in this modern technological world. Because I know that money is an obstacle for many well-intentioned and hard-working young adults, retirees, families, and singles looking for a new start, I strive to make the Ardent Light Ecovillage Community (ALEC) Project affordable. ALEC members are investors of the ALEC Project and therefore have the right to live on the land, use the land for their own endeavors and projects, eat the food, drink the water, consume the energy produced from the land, and receive part of the profit generated by the ALEC Project. In short, they have the right to use and enjoy the resources of the land in harmony with everyone and in a self-sustainable way.
Feeling complete and fulfilled, I have a new perspective and understanding of life. I feel passion for what I do. I am back to my engineering practice, maintaining my holistic healing practice that has been so useful to me and others. I am here to DO my best always and enjoy it.

With a Bachelor’s in Electronic Engineering and a Master’s in Systems Engineering, JAL started his career as a professor, teaching for 14 years at the Universidad Simón Bolívar in Caracas, Venezuela. In 1997, he obtained his Ph.D. degree in Engineering Mathematics from Claremont Graduate University and California State University, Long Beach. After his doctorate, he transitioned out of academia and started working full-time for industry in various high-tech companies in California, including a Hubble space telescope project sponsored by NASA at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). His dissertation on neural networks has been used by other researchers. He has more than 20 years of experience in Embedded Control Systems, a passion of his life. He consults in the field but he is open to new opportunities as a full time employee. Dr. Luzardo has taken some years for personal growth to understand the needs of others along with his own needs. He is now in his most productive years.
